As educators we must be cognizant of the fact that our classrooms are very diverse. No two students come with the same values, reading abilities, prior knowledge or even attitude to our specific Content Area. It is imperative that we ignore these differences when planning classroom instruction. We must become aware of the "ways of knowing", so that we can adequately present material using a variety of mediums with specific reference to the thechnology we have available to us. The method of presentation, delivery and assessment can allow us to capture the attention of the "bored" student.
The use of ICT can cater to the differing learners and the way in which they absorb information. the power point can be used to condense larg volumes of information into precise, succinct, statements. Added to which hypermedia can help create visual and interactive links to engage our demotivated and struggling students to become curious and want to investigate into the subject matter. As educators we must also give serious thought to not only our methods of delivery but our assessment procedures as well. We can no longer afford to be linear in our methodology as Reading Specialists.
I can truly say that this is one of the better posts that I have read. I appreciate that most people are really hyped about this course and yes, there is a lot of technology provided and yes, we should utilize it.
ReplyDeleteTwo quick points
- You're not a very good teacher if you don't listen to your students and if you don't learn from them
- Not every media is suited to every lesson or even to every student.

I agree with the sentiments expressed in this blog, however I want to reiterate the need for varying forms of assessment to cater for the needs of our learners. Sometimes, in our teaching, we tend to rely too heavily on the use of traditional forms of assessment such as pencil and paper tests. We often forget the benefits to be gained from authentic forms of assessment which have proven to be quite effective with struggling readers. This happens because instruments such as journals, portfolios and projects activate the interest of students. Once these readers are motivated to learn then they are well on their way to achieving success in reading.
ReplyDeleteAbigail,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that our classrooms are very diverse in various of ways. i would like to ask something here though do we assess with this diversity in mind? if so then why there is still CXC pencil and paper exams for all? Why is there still SEA pencil and paper for all? Are we really serious about meeting the diverse population in our classrooms.
If we are moving on into the 21st century with the web 2.0 tools how are we going to assess them using these tools. I was not taught this and would definitely need some help here.
Our Government is of the view that every child should get a laptop to enter secondary school in September but can every child be assessed using technology. Remember the diverse populace before us.
